Team Quartz Sparkles with Creativity

Editor’s Note: Faith Lipton is the Born to Read Early Literacy Outreach Coordinator for Sarasota County Libraries. In May of 2016, the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading held a Mind in the Making (MITM) Facilitator Institute for 27 individuals from 13 different agencies in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Since then, these facilitators have been presenting Mind in the Making’s Seven Essential Skills Training Modules to over 375 people throughout the Suncoast region. Due to demand, a second Mind in the Making Facilitator Institute was held in February of 2017, raising the number of local facilitators to 50.

Team Quartz just had the pleasure of completing our Mind in the Making Modules. Shelly Dorfman and I led a diverse group of educators and parents through the 7 Essential Life Skills we are hoping to promote in children and share in the community. The majority of our group consisted of home family educators from the HIPPY program at the YMCA; we also had some afterschool care workers, some Sarasota County school employees, and parents. This group was an absolute joy to work with.

What I really loved was their willingness so share their experiences. Mind in the Making offers a lot of opportunities to reflect on situations one has experienced in the past and discuss different outcomes with the group. It is not always easy to put yourself out there—but they were always open. They also learned so much from each other by sharing their experiences, and sharing suggestions for solving difficult situations they faced in the context of whatever module we were exploring that day. As you can see, they also got pretty creative during our Critical Thinking module when asked to create Newspaper Hats. They jumped right in and loved working together in groups.

We will miss Team Quartz and always remember this experience we shared together.
