Sudzie’s Sparkling Debut

Beth Duda, director of the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

Recently, a joyful new presence bubbled up at the Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry event in Arcadia. Sudzie made her debut at SuperMatt Laundromat! The laundromat’s management, staff, and patrons, along with our community partners, were completely charmed by this fun and educational addition to one of our most meaningful events.

Sudzie’s story began, as so many of our good ideas do, with curiosity and collaboration. Those of us who frequently work at Pop-Up Neighbor events had long wondered how to help patrons understand a better way to load washers and use detergent effectively. We learned from our friends at SuperMatt Laundromats that most high-efficiency machines only need ⅓ cup of detergent, and even the largest machines do best with ½ cup. Machines work most efficiently when two-thirds to three-quarters full—not overstuffed.

This sparked our joyful stewardship DNA into action. During a staff meeting, Debra Jacobs suggested developing a character called Sudzie who could connect with our neighbors at the laundromat in a fun and approachable way. Stacy Sternberg brought that vision to life with a cheerful and friendly design for Sudzie. Karen Windon suggested creating reusable cling stickers to share this helpful information. Nancy Henry then transformed that idea into a reality by creating the eye-catching stickers featuring Sudzie!

Embracing the fun of the idea, Beth Duda designed and created the Sudzie costume, complete with bubbly details and a joyful wig. Kelli Smith brought Sudzie to life at the debut event in DeSoto County, charming everyone with her warmth, enthusiasm, and playful energy. Thanks to Kelli’s delightful portrayal, Sudzie quickly became the star of the day—inviting laughter, photos, and plenty of conversations about smart laundry habits.

Adding to the spirit of community, the DeSoto High School boys basketball team volunteered throughout the event, assisting families with their laundry, carrying supplies, and spreading smiles. They were joined by a number of dedicated community volunteers who worked alongside them, offering helping hands and friendly encouragement to families throughout the morning. Their teamwork and kindness reflected the very heart of what these gatherings are all about—neighbors helping neighbors.

By the end of the day, 987 loads of laundry for 94 families had been completed, a sparkling success made possible through creativity, compassion, and collaboration.

Sudzie’s debut reminded us once again that when we combine imagination, joyful stewardship, and community connection, even a laundromat can become a place of learning, laughter, and love. Here’s to many more bright, bubbly appearances from Sudzie at future Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry events!
