Getting Straight to The POINT 2.0

Laurie Miller, Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

Dear Friends,

Did you hear about the stellar open house event we had at The POINT 2.0 on February 22, 2024? Picture this: a day filled with laughter, exploration, and a whole lot of passion for community empowerment! And I don’t think I’m just saying that looking back through lavender-colored glasses (though I’m going to get to the lavender shortly).

First off, we didn’t beat around the bush; we got straight to the heart of the matter with not one, but two fabulous events on the same epic day. One was dedicated to our incredible volunteers, the generous heroes behind the scenes, and the other was for the immensely talented staff and friends of The Patterson Foundation. Double the fun, double the impact!

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the spaces—we unveiled some swanky new areas at POINT 2.0. From the welcoming reception area to the cozy break room, every nook and cranny exuded vibes of passion, organization, information, nurturing, and teaching—the essence of The POINT acronym itself.

And let’s not forget the pièce de résistance – our spacious warehouse! Imagine more than 80,000 “THIS BOOK IS COOL!” books waiting to be distributed, alongside 8,100 Kindergarten Readiness Bags, all set to ignite the spark of learning in children in our community. That’s what I call making a POINT!

Now, onto the games! We spiced things up with not one, but two electrifying games. First up, we put our guests’ creativity to the test with a room-naming game – who knew supply rooms could be so memorable? And then, we kicked it up a notch with a thrilling scavenger hunt, where folks snapped photos of themselves while uncovering the hidden gems of our new space, like the roll-up door, or completing challenges like filling up Kindergarten Readiness Bags. Can you believe we filled close to 200 bags right then and there? Now, that’s the power of The Patterson Foundation in action.

Now, let’s talk about the journey. Back in 2016, our space started as humble storage for organizing resources for the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading’s growing initiatives including the Attendance Awareness Poster Contest, Kindergarten Readiness Bags, Mind in the Making, Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry, Reach Out and Read, Suncoast Remake Learning Days, the Suncoast Summer Reading Challenge, and THIS BOOK IS COOL! As our initiatives flourished faster than a Florida garden in springtime, it was clear we needed more elbow room. So, in June of 2021, we upgraded to a roomier space at Crossings at Siesta Key. But wait, the plot continues! Now, cue the drumroll, because we’ve upped the ante once more and landed here at The POINT 2.0!

I know, it sounds like a winding journey, but sometimes that’s the path to getting to the point, or in our case, The POINT 2.0. Thanks to the unwavering support of The Patterson Foundation, we’ve evolved from cramped corners to the expansive new POINT, where ample storage and space enable us to spread our wings and execute these initiatives with excellence.

And speaking of evolution, let’s not forget to give a shout out to Stacy Sternberg for infusing our space with that soothing lavender hue. Who knew a color could be so transformative?

So, there you have it – a glimpse into the fabulous festivities at The POINT 2.0 open house. It’s been quite the journey, but every laugh, every smile, and every filled bag makes it all worthwhile.

Until next time, keep spreading those possibilities, one POINT at a time!

Yours in passion and purpose,
Laurie
