The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (SCGLR) has just wrapped up an exceptional summer of reading across Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties, and the results are truly inspiring. Fueled by the collective efforts of The Patterson Foundation and local champions like the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, United Way Suncoast, and United Way of Charlotte County, our region has set a new standard for summer learning initiatives.
This summer, we proudly put forth two pivotal programs: the Suncoast Summer Reading Challenge (SSRC) and THIS BOOK IS COOL! (TBIC!) These initiatives have made a remarkable impact, underscoring our commitment to preventing summer learning loss and fostering a love of reading among our youngest learners.
Let’s dive into the numbers that speak volumes about our success. Through the SSRC, 84 summer camps engaged 8,276 children, with an impressive 7,119 of them reading six or more books. Altogether, our young readers devoured 164,691 books. This accomplishment not only combats the well-documented summer slide but also builds a solid foundation for academic success.
Equally impressive, THIS BOOK IS COOL! reached 3,123 families and 4,180 children, providing them with access to webisodes, vocabulary enrichment, and 20 high-quality books. The enthusiasm was palpable, with 2,685 children reading more than six books and a total of 106,700 books read through this program alone.
Combined, both initiatives served 12,456 children, with 9,804 reading over six books, totaling a staggering 271,391 books read. These numbers reflect participation and an engagement with reading that will pay dividends in the form of improved literacy and academic achievement.
