The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (SCGLR) has been recognized with Pacesetter Honors by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR) for its work in 2022–23. This is a moment of pride for everyone involved in nurturing the future of our children in Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.
Pacesetter Honors are awarded to communities making measurable progress in critical areas affecting early school success. This year, the focus was on “Moving the Needle in Impact Areas,” covering various vital aspects of child development and education.
Our Community’s Efforts and Achievements
The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a collaborative effort involving funders, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, and more, has been acknowledged for its exceptional work in ensuring that children, especially those from low-income families, are not only reading at grade level by the end of third grade but are also set up for continued success in school and life.
The dedication and hard work of our community are truly paying off. SCGLR was recognized for three significant initiatives: Grade-Level Reading, consisting of two programs in Sarasota County led by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County; Digital Access for All, a four-county initiative led by The Patterson Foundation; and Suncoast Remake Learning Days, a second, four-county initiative led by The Patterson Foundation. Moreover, a fourth initiative led by The Patterson Foundation, Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry, was named a finalist, showcasing our community’s innovative approach to tackling educational challenges.
SCGLR also received accolades from the CGLR Communications Expo for five tools including event guides, recap videos, newsletters, and our website. These resources have been instrumental in the campaign’s success and in engaging the community more broadly.
The Impact of Collaborative Effort
These collective efforts are reshaping the educational landscape. The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading has been a beacon of hope and progress, thanks to the support and strength provided by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, United Way Suncoast, United Way of Charlotte County, and The Patterson Foundation.
Ralph Smith, the managing director of CGLR, rightly points out the importance of learning from these Pacesetter Communities. “The strategies, creativity, and dedication they exhibit are invaluable lessons for all of us committed to bettering educational outcomes across the nation. This recognition is not just an accolade; it’s a call to action. It encourages us to continue our mission, to innovate, and to remain committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed. The journey of the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is far from over, and with continued community support, we can aspire to even greater heights.”
