Sarasota County Schools

The Sarasota County School District serves 10,490 students in kindergarten through third grade. While Sarasota County has one of the highest percentages of students who read proficiently by third grade in Florida, we are committed to ensuring that all children are able to read on grade level by third grade. The Superintendent established the Task Force on the Achievement Gap to develop an action plan to reach this goal through deliberate research and methodical program development.

Our district has a strong partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading in Sarasota. Our primary focus with the campaign in the coming school year is to replicate the pilot program at the Alta Vista Elementary School Eagle Academy where they have successfully begun to close the achievement gap by implementing an early learning program, preventing the summer slide and addressing attendance concerns. Other priorities include reducing suspensions of minority students, increasing minority representation in gifted programs and strengthening relationships with high-quality preschool programs.
