Each area of our region faces unique challenges when it comes to the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. In Manatee County, 49 percent of third graders are reading below grade-level.
Thanks to a community-wide vision of success, the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading includes several community programs in Manatee County that are providing children and their families with resources to improve.
Reading Recovery Program
United Community Center’s Reading Recovery program meets regularly during the school year. After the school day, 90 children from kindergarten-third grade are transported from several elementary schools to UCC’s 13th Avenue Dream Center to participate in this individualized mentoring/tutoring initiative designed to increase their reading levels and instill a love of reading. Certified elementary school teachers conduct the program. Reading Buddies, adult volunteers from Christ Church of Longboat Key, travel to the center on Thursdays to mentor students one-on-one.
Over the summer, the students meet three times per week from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The Christ Church Reading Buddies continue their efforts and work with small groups of children.
The Summer Enhancement program was funded in part through a matching $15,000 grant from the Manatee Matches Giving Circle of the Manatee Community Foundation.
