Each area of our region faces unique challenges when it comes to the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. In Manatee County, 49 percent of third graders are reading below grade-level.

Thanks to a community-wide vision of success, the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading includes several community programs in Manatee County that are providing children and their families with resources to improve.

Reading Recovery Program

Summer Learning

RBAwards2015_024 (2)United Community Center’s Reading Recovery program meets regularly during the school year. After the school day, 90 children from kindergarten-third grade are transported from several elementary schools to UCC’s 13th Avenue Dream Center to participate in this individualized mentoring/tutoring initiative designed to increase their reading levels and instill a love of reading. Certified elementary school teachers conduct the program. Reading Buddies, adult volunteers from Christ Church of Longboat Key, travel to the center on Thursdays to mentor students one-on-one.

Over the summer, the students meet three times per week from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The Christ Church Reading Buddies continue their efforts and work with small groups of children.

The Summer Enhancement program was funded in part through a matching $15,000 grant from the Manatee Matches Giving Circle of the Manatee Community Foundation.
