The Community Foundation of Sarasota County
Through the generosity of its donors, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County has invested millions of dollars in education in Sarasota County for many years. Together with The Patterson Foundation, partner nonprofit organizations, community groups, and the School District of Sarasota County, the Community Foundation is proudly supporting the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading in Sarasota County. We believe that working together, our community can have a huge impact on improving school readiness, combating summer learning loss and preventing chronic absence.
At this time, our efforts are primarily focused on the attendance zones where more than 90 percent of students are on free or reduced lunch. Historically, schools in these zones have had the highest percentage of students underperforming on the FCAT reading exam in the third grade. Inspired by Ascend at the Aspen Institute, our approach incorporates two-generation strategies to support vulnerable parents and children together.
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County prepared Sarasota’s Community Solutions Action Plan (CSAP), accepted by the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading in 2014.
Additionally, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County is a resource for giving and philanthropy for grade-level reading in the community with three funds established for early-literacy efforts:
- Alta Vista Eagle Academy Fund
- Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Fund
- Two-Generational Approach Fund
